What Are MTG Tiebreakers?
When multiple players finish a Magic: The Gathering tournament with the same number of match points, tournament software uses tiebreakers to determine final standings.
This is why two players with identical records can finish in different positions.
Opponent Match Win Percentage (OMW%)
Opponent Match Win Percentage is the most important tiebreaker in most MTG tournaments.
OMW% measures how well your opponents performed throughout the event. If your opponents win more matches, your OMW% increases.
In simple terms:
- Beat strong opponents = higher OMW%
- Beat opponents who later lose repeatedly = lower OMW%
Game Win Percentage (GW%)
Game Win Percentage tracks the percentage of individual games you won during the tournament.
Winning matches 2-0 instead of 2-1 can improve this tiebreaker.
Opponent Game Win Percentage (OGW%)
Opponent Game Win Percentage measures how successful your opponents were in their individual games throughout the event.
This is generally used after OMW% and GW%.
Why Did I Miss Top 8?
Many players finish with identical records but miss Top 8 because of tiebreakers.
Example:
- Player A: 5-1 record, OMW% 64%
- Player B: 5-1 record, OMW% 58%
Player A ranks higher despite having the same match record.
