What Are MTG Tiebreakers?
MTG tournament standings use tiebreakers when players finish with the same match points. The three common Magic: The Gathering tiebreakers are OMW% (Opponents' Match-Win Percentage), GW% (Game-Win Percentage), and OGW% (Opponents' Game-Win Percentage).
In simple terms: OMW% measures how well your opponents performed, GW% measures how many individual games you won, and OGW% measures how many individual games your opponents won.
This is why two players with identical tournament records can finish in different positions or why one player makes Top 8 while another misses the cut.
What Does OMW% Mean in MTG?
OMW% means Opponents' Match-Win Percentage. It measures how well the opponents you played performed throughout the tournament. If your opponents continue winning matches, your OMW% generally improves.
In simple terms:
- Opponents who keep winning = higher OMW%
- Opponents who later lose repeatedly = lower OMW%
This is why your tiebreakers can change throughout an event even after you have finished playing a particular opponent.
What Does GW% Mean in MTG?
GW% means Game-Win Percentage. It measures the percentage of individual games you won during the tournament.
For example, winning matches 2-0 instead of 2-1 can result in a stronger GW%.
What Does OGW% Mean in MTG?
OGW% means Opponents' Game-Win Percentage. It measures how successful your opponents were in their individual games throughout the tournament.
Like OMW%, this number depends partly on how your opponents perform during the event.

The easiest way to remember the three common MTG tiebreakers is:
- OMW% — how well your opponents performed in matches
- GW% — how well you performed in individual games
- OGW% — how well your opponents performed in individual games
Why Did I Miss Top 8?
Players can finish with identical match records but end the tournament in different positions because of tiebreakers.
For example:
- Player A: 5-1 record, OMW% 64%
- Player B: 5-1 record, OMW% 58%
Both players have the same match record, but Player A may rank higher because of the stronger tiebreaker.
