How Many Wins Do You Need To Make Top 8?
Magic: The Gathering tournaments typically use Swiss rounds followed by a Top 8 playoff. The exact record needed depends on attendance, tiebreakers, intentional draws, and the size of the playoff cut. This calculator estimates the records and match points commonly needed to make Top 8, Top 16, or Top 32.
How Swiss Rounds Work
Swiss tournaments pair players with similar records each round. Players earn three match points for a win, one point for a draw, and zero points for a loss. After the final Swiss round, the highest-ranked players advance to the playoff rounds.
What Are MTG Tiebreakers?
When players finish with the same match points, Magic tournaments use tiebreakers to determine standings. Common MTG tiebreakers include Opponents' Match-Win Percentage (OMW%), Game-Win Percentage (GW%), and Opponents' Game-Win Percentage (OGW%). These can determine who makes Top 8 when players have identical records.

What Record Usually Makes Top 8?
There is no guaranteed record that always makes Top 8. In smaller tournaments, a single loss may still be enough. In larger tournaments, players often need records such as 5-1, 6-1, 6-0-1, or better depending on attendance and tiebreakers.
What Is An Intentional Draw?
An intentional draw occurs when both players agree to record a draw instead of playing their match. Players sometimes intentionally draw in the final Swiss round if the additional match point is enough to lock both players into the playoff cut.
